You thrill to God’s Word, chewing on Scripture day and night. You’re a tree planted in Eden, bearing fresh fruit every month, never dropping a leaf, always in blossom. You’re not at all like the wicked, who are mere windblown dust.

Psalm 1:2-3, The Message

I love going for a stroll at this desolate spot dotted with acacia scrub brush. If I’m lucky I might see a few zebra and gazelle in the midst of the normally dry, dusty, and barren landscape. During my recent visit I was pleasantly surprised to see the vegetation quite green, due to Kenya’s recent rainy season. It made me think about the contrast illustrated in this scripture. If we thrill to God’s Word we will always be in blossom, just like this beautiful flower on a Sweet Thorn Acacia tree.

About the author

When God called me to Kenya, he revealed a simple assignment: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ He then connected me to a handful of single parents and their children, orphans, and refugees in urban slums and rural villages. I have come alongside these friends in long-lasting, one-on-one relationships since 2001. We share meals, we laugh and we cry together, we go on picnics. Sometimes it includes a financial hand-up and other times it includes balloons and a birthday cake. I am currently learning how to better do cross-cultural ministry through a balanced lifestyle that includes contemplative practices.
