Aroma of Christ

Jim and I were spending a few free hours walking around old Amman while in Jordan last year, near the Roman Theatre. It was the first sunny day after a severe winter storm. Just near the mosque, we smelled a spice shop. We always love to step into those, as the smell just draws you in!

We ended up buying some of the cardamom flavored coffee beans, the hibiscus flowers for herbal tea, the curry mixes, and the various thyme and sesame variations of Zatar, and as we talked to the Palestinian owner (whose English was excellent!) he told us he had been selling spices all his life, after their family fled Palestine in 1948. We enjoyed chatting with him, hearing about his relatives in the States, and we tried to care for him. I hope that we were a sweet smelling fragrance to him of Christ.

About the author

My name is Susan Bergman De Vries. I left the United States in 1968 on my first summer missions trip, left again as a young wife in 1972, and have since then lived in Ghana, Costa Rica, Mindanao (Philippines), Kenya, and now Cyprus in the E.U. We have 3 daughters, born on 3 different continents, and now all 3 and their husbands are working in 3 different missions, in Mozambique and Brazil. All 10 of my grandchildren speak Portuguese (or will when they learn to talk) which my husband and I do not. Bummer, huh?
