…the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown
into the sea and gathered fish of every kind.
Matthew 13:47
A strange phenomenon happens in our village each October in France. The lagoon begins to cool for winter and a certain species of fish called the Dorade begin to migrate through the canals of our village to the warmer waters of the sea. As they swim through these waterways, fishermen, young and old, line the banks knowing that this is the best time of year to snag those fish. From morning until night, fishing is in high season with lots of talk and camaraderie along the way.
Of course, the topic of fishing also comes up in the Bible. According to the New Testament, fishing has always been about catching people and surprising them with God’s essage of love. Jesus said when he saw Simon Peter and Andrew, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men”. What a relief to know that fishing is about Jesus not about us. It is about our readiness to follow him, to share his words, and have faith in his leadership over times and places. And it is about his heart of love for all humanity, that not one should perish but all come to saving faith.
