Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:35

I took this photo on a journey to Damascus several years ago. Bread is a staple of life, eaten every day, if not every meal, by most Syrians.

Damascus is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world, and has a rich history of Christianity. My favorite place in the city is Straight Street, where God called a praying man, Ananias, into a head-on collision with the infamous Saul, whom he thought of with terror (see Acts 9).

Yet only a tiny sliver of the population today knows Jesus—the Bread of life—personally. Damascus is a place where God caused some miraculous encounters in times past. I’m praying for some miraculous encounters there in the days to come.
